CHARACTER NAME: Ciel Phantomhive
SERIES: Kuroshitsuji
RESERVED: Y
WISHLIST: Y
PERSONALITY: At first glance, Ciel probably seems like the oldest twelve-year-old you could ever meet. He is serious, ambitious, and dedicated to his goals, not at all given to frivolous pursuits (though if nothing else, he does have a serious sweet tooth). He obsessively plays games--his favorites being those that require careful strategy and calculation, such as chess--but he seems to get barely any fun or carefree enjoyment out of them; his motivation for playing is mainly just to keep his mind sharp. He respects few people, and treats with outright contempt those he considers stupid, greedy, lazy, gluttonous, etc; there are few things Ciel hates so much as adults with uncontrollable vices. He considers himself to have more life experience than most adults twice or even thrice his age, and he despises being treated as the young child he actually is, preferring to be treated as an equal by adults, though he does on very rare occasions allow himself to be mothered.
Ciel is a brat, no mistake, but he has good reasons for acting as he does. He has experienced first-hand the consequences of the greed and lust of the human race; the unspeakable tortures and humiliations he suffered two years ago left him a ruined shell of his former self. Once a sweet and cheerful little boy, Ciel is now a bitter, cynical creature dedicated solely to revenge, with an inherent distrust of adults and authority figures.
He retains some qualities of his former self; though he often seems emotionless, he does show concern for the people important to him and cares especially about their safety, not wanting to lose anyone else as he lost his parents. He respects intelligence and talent. Ciel has no genuine smiles to speak of; his are all cynical, superior or fake. He considers himself to be incapable of ever feeling genuine happiness again.
Ciel suffers something like post-traumatic stress disorder from the physical and psychological trauma he experienced at the hands of his torturers. He experiences flashbacks, sickness, paralysis, etc which are triggered especially by witnessing scenes of violence. In Edensphere this will remain, even though he won't know WHY he experiences such symptoms. He is also basically incapable of taking care of himself, having had someone else to do it for his entire life. Without Sebastian to help him, Ciel has trouble doing tasks as simple as buttoning a shirt.
TIMELINE: Taking Ciel from the end of the Noah's Ark circus mystery, after Ciel orders Sebastian to burn Baron Kelvin's mansion and they escape it.
BACKGROUND: As a child, Ciel was happy; he was raised by loving parents and doted on by aunts and cousins. All that changed when a mysterious fire occurred on Ciel's tenth birthday, completely destroying the Phantomhive mansion and killing both of his parents, leaving him with little family other than his cousin Elizabeth (also his fiancee) and his maternal aunt Angelina, more commonly known as Madam Red. Before Ciel even knew what was happening, he was whisked away from home by an unknown religious cult, who branded him on his back, kept him locked in a small cage for a month, and subjected him to torture before ultimately killing him in a ritual to summon a demon. The demon came to Ciel instead and offered him the chance to obtain his revenge in exchange for his soul, to which the boy agreed. The demon brought Ciel back to life, murdered the assembled members of the cult, and marked the seal of their contract on Ciel's right eye and his own hand. Ciel vowed to find the people responsible for his parents' deaths and his kidnapping and end their lives as well.
A year after the fire, Ciel reentered London society as the head of the noble Phantomhive family and the Funtom Company, renowned toy manufacturers, with the demon serving as his butler; Ciel gave him the name Sebastian Michaelis. Ciel had also inherited service as Queen Victoria's Watchdog, charged by Britain's monarch to investigate supernatural occurences and unsolvable crimes. One such task given by the queen was to investigate the killer known as Jack the Ripper. His and Sebastian's first lead, following the trail of a lecherous viscount, turned out to be a red herring. Sebastian subsequently revealed that no human could have committed these crimes. To catch the murderer, Ciel and Sebastian set up their own stake-out near the residence of a prostitute they suspected would be the next victim. Hearing a scream, Ciel rushed into her home; the sight of her gruesome, bloody murder caused Ciel to react with paralysis and sickness, and Sebastian had to remove him from the scene.
Grell Sutcliff, Madam Red's seemingly incompetent butler, was also present at the scene, and Sebastian quickly deduced that he was the murderer. Madam Red appeared from the prostitute's home, and she and Grell revealed that they had been carrying out the murders together, and that Grell was a death god. Incapable of bearing a child, Madam Red took out her anguish and fury at never being able to achieve her desire of becoming a mother on the prostitutes who had abortions. As Sebastian and Grell fought, Madam Red threatened to kill her nephew Ciel, and nearly stabbed him. Sebastian rushed to his aid, but Ciel stopped him from killing his aunt, recognizing her hesitation to kill him, who had been almost like a surrogate son to her. She dropped her knife, saying that she couldn't kill him, at which point Grell murdered her, expressing his disappointment for her weakness.
Ciel ordered Sebastian to kill Grell, but just as he was about to carry it out a second death god, William T. Spears, interrupted the fight and dragged Grell away. Following the incident, Ciel attended his aunt's funeral and later spoke to Sebastian in the cemetary, during which time he ordered Sebastian never to betray or abandon him. Sebastian vowed to remain beside him "until the end."
Later, Ciel and Sebastian begin to investigate a series of crimes against British citizens that are seemingly carried out by Indian immigrants, but are in actuality committed by Lord West, a British nobleman who is trying to terrorize competitors out of an upcoming curry-making competition. In their investigation they are joined by an Indian prince called Soma and his own butler, Agni, who essentially worships Soma as a god. Soma is in Britain searching for his lost love Meena, who turns out to be working in Lord West's household, and to help Soma save Meena, Agni enters the curry-making competition under Lord West's employ (against Soma's wishes). Ciel decides to enter the competition to prevent Lord West from winning its prize (a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria), though Soma insists that Agni's curry can't be beaten. Sebastian, however, manages to replicate the recipe and then improves on it by making it into curry bread, and the queen awards him first prize. Agni and Soma are reunited, though Meena rejects Soma's attempt to rescue her and remains with her western employer.
The Queen soon sends Ciel a new objective: investigate the Noah's Ark circus troupe, which is believed to be involved with the disappearances of numerous British children. Ciel and Sebastian infiltrate the troupe and manage to get recruited as performers, and discover that most of the main cast have advanced prosthetic limbs, all bearing a specific crest. They also discover that William T. Spears has joined the group, and Sebastian suspects that the shinigami's presence means that something important must be going on behind the scenes. Sebastian suggests they search the tents of the main cast, though Ciel ends up doing it on his own; he finds a letter with his own name in it and a crest that matches the performers' prosthetics, along with a photograph of an older man with the circus performers who he takes to be the crest's owner.
Ciel orders Sebastian to find out the identity of the man behind the crest, and unbeknownst to him, Sebastian seduces Beast, a member of the main cast, who reveals the name Baron Kelvin. Ciel and Sebastian then leave the circus and return to London to continue their investigation. When Joker, the troupe's leader, reports to Baron Kelvin that Ciel is on to him, he invites Ciel and Sebastian to his home for dinner. He reveals that he could have been a part of the cult that kidnapped and tried to sacrifice Ciel to the demon, and his obsession with Ciel is such that he has recreated the scene of Ciel's murder again and again with the kidnapped children and the aid of the circus troupe's doctor. He brings them to see the basement dungeon that was created exactly like the site of Ciel's imprisonment and torture.
In disgust, Ciel shoots the Baron. Joker rushes to kill him, but Sebastian severs Joker's sword arm and leaves him to bleed out on the floor. The troupe's doctor appears, and reveals that the exquisite porcelain of their prosthetic limbs are made with the bones of the kidnapped children. As Ciel, Sebastian, and Joker look on, the doctor murders a child on the sacrificial table, triggering in Ciel a violent flashback. Sick, terrified and enraged, he orders Sebastian to kill everyone present and burn the entire mansion.
ABILITIES: Ciel can fire a pistol and play a mean game of chess...and that's basically it. No special abilities to speak of.
